UN watch Nominates Raif Badawi for the 2015 EU Chaillot Prize

Hillel Neuer has today confirmed that UN Watch is nominating rights hero Raif Badawi for EU's Chaillot Prize for Promotion of Human Rights in the Gulf.

The Prize, awarded in close cooperation with Embassies of European Union Member States, honours local civil society organisations, public or private institutions as well as individuals for their efforts in promoting general awareness of human rights and the rights of vulnerable groups in the GCC region.

In 2015, the Chaillot Prize will be awarded to applicants from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for actions, campaigns/projects launched (or in progress) after the 1st of January 2014 as well as lifetime achievements.

In 2014, the Chaillot Prize went to the Bahraini National Institution for Human Rights and the Ombudsman to acknowledge and further encourage both organisations' efforts and work for the promotion and protection of human rights in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and in particular to acknowledge the organisations' annual reports, which contain comprehensive and sincere accounts of the country's human rights situation.

The deadline for submitting applications for this year's edition is 31 October 2015. The Prize Winner will be determined by the European Union Delegation in Riyadh and by a Jury of Ambassadors of European Union Member States accredited to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. An awarding ceremony will be organised in December 2015 to mark the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly, on the 10th of December 1948, at the Palais de Chaillot, in Paris. Interested candidates are invited to refer to the Award Rules and Procedures and the Application Form (in annex).
